University of Malaya (UM) has once again stunned the nation by placing 22nd overall in the category of Engineering & Technology in the QS World University Rankings by Subject.
Delving a little deeper into the latest addition of arguably the world's best known rankings curated by Quacquarelli Symonds, universities were ranked by specific subjects, such as chemical engineering, medicine and more. The honour of being Malaysia's highest ranking university however, goes to Taylor's University for the subject of Hospitality & Leisure Management, coming in at no.21 worldwide, an improvement of 7 places from 2017.
Don't feel too bad for UM though, as the newest addition to their educational stable, Library and Information Studies, ran a close second, finishing 24th globally. On top of that, a host of their other offerings ranked highly: Electrical & Electronic Engineering (30th), Development Studies (30th), Mechanical, Aeronautical & Manufacturing Engineering (41st), Chemical Engineering (42nd), Civil & Structural Engineering (46th), and Mineral & Mining (47th). Additionally, branch campuses located in Malaysia fared extremely well. Monash University finished joint 29th worldwide for the subject of medicine. Curtin University also did exceptionally well, ranking no.2 worldwide for Mineral & Mining Engineering.
All in all, a total of 10 Malaysian university subjects made it into the top 50 in various fields, 7 from UM, 1 from Taylor's, 1 from the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) (Theology, Divinity, and Religious Studies at no.31) and 1 from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) (Mineral and Mining Engineering at no. 43).
