When we hear the phrase ‘beautiful university campus’, we often associate it with the likes of old colleges such as the University of Oxford in England, or internationally acclaimed universities in the United States such as MIT and Harvard University. Large and innovatory buildings surrounded by a touch of green and natural beauty. Well, some of you may not know this, but we have a stunning university like that right here in our beloved country!
Yes, you better believe it—this beautiful, breathtaking university is the University College of Technology Sarawak (UCTS) and it is located in Sibu, Sarawak. With its green learning environment and state-of-the-art facilities, this futuristically designed campus definitely stands out as one of the most beautiful in Malaysia. The campus incorporates the concept of green architecture to minimise negative environmental impact while still maintaining a comfortable, user-friendly teaching and learning experience for the staff and students.
For its innovative campus design and facilities, UCTS became the very first university in Malaysia to achieve a “Platinum Index” rating in the Green Building Index (GBI), Malaysia’s green rating tool for buildings and towns in an effort to promote sustainability in the built-environment and raise awareness of environmental issues.
On the topic of its green architecture, UCTS is planning to establish a Technology and Science Park, making it one of the very few universities in Malaysia to have its own. With a vision and commitment in the development and production of technical human resource for the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE), UCTS aims for the new Technology Park to be the premier destination for both the local and foreign individuals aspiring to achieve excellence through research and development initiatives in areas such as Transportation & Logistics, Food Technology, Materials, Bio-Technology, ICT, Automation, Green Technology and Agriculture Technology.
The facilities in the university are well-furnished. The university’s library is a three-storey building with a total sitting capacity of 500 students at any one time. Apart from the physical books, the library is also equipped with 100 computers.
Besides that, UCTS has a number of different laboratories and classrooms catered to each specific course so that students will have everything they need. For example, there are Hydraulic Labs and Environmental and Waste Water Labs for students in the Civil Engineering programme; and there are also different Food Processing and Analysis Labs for those pursuing the Food Technology programme.
UCTS aims to be a global technological university founded on science and technology. As of October 2016, UCTS has five faculties and four centres offering a number of courses focusing on Engineering and Technology, Computing, Business and Management, and Built Environment. With four schools emphasising on engineering and technology, business and management, built environment, and computer science, UCTS intends to shape graduates that can contribute to the betterment of the country’s future.
UCTS also offers two foundation programmes, Foundation in Arts and Foundation in Science. The Foundation in Arts programme will lead students to bachelor’s degree programmes in the fields of Business, Accountancy, Information Technology, Architecture, Communications, Languages and any Non-Science or Engineering fields. On the other hand, the Foundation in Science programme will take students on the pathway of Science and Engineering Technology fields.
Besides foundation and undergraduate programmes, there are also postgraduate programmes available for students, whether by coursework (taught) or research.
