A nurse plays an important role in the healthcare team that provides for the care of a patient.
It is a challenging and demanding job, which requires knowledge and a caring personality.
For 29-year-old Jesrina Kaur Sidhu, a Sister (assistant ward manager) at Ramsay Sime Darby Ara Damansara Medical Centre, her 11- year experience as a nurse has been a fulfilling one.
She began working as a nurse after completing her Diploma in Nursing at the Ramsay Sime Darby Healthcare College. She then completed her Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Nursing (Post Registration) from Lincoln University College.
“I decided to become a nurse as I love working with people.”
Jesrina said having the ability to help in a patient’s healing process was a satisfying one, and she felt happy when her patients thanked her when they have recovered.
“This makes me strive harder to perform my duties,” She said.
“It is a challenging vocation and requires a number of skills, especially interpersonal skills, to work with other staff and communicate with patients and their families.”
“I had a pleasant experience studying at Ramsay Sime Darby Healthcare College. The lecturers were experienced and were always there to answer our queries. This made learning easy for us, whether in understanding theories or in clinical application.”
Jesrina’s daily routine begins with her assessing the progress of each patient.
“Assessing based on nursing process involves observing and monitoring behavior, vitals, signs and symptoms of the condition. I am involved in implementing a plan and providing nursing care and treatment as per doctor’s order and also observing tolerance to care or treatment given.”
Nurses must also assist doctors during their rounds and while performing procedures in the ward. They also carry out pre-procedural preparation for patients undergoing an operation and procedures.
“We monitor post-operative or post-procedural changes for patients to aid in their recovery process and notify the doctors on changes or deterioration in client condition as well as recovery, using the SBAR (Situation, Background, recent Assessment, and Recommendation) method,” said Jesrina.
Nurses also document the care and treatment given based on data collected throughout the nursing process.
As a senior staff member, Jesrina educates patients and their families on diseases and proper care.
She is also responsible in orientating and mentoring new nursing staff and student nurses.
Among the programmes available from the School of Nursing are Bachelor of Science (Hons) Contemporary Nursing 2+0, Diploma in Nursing and Diploma in Nursing (Assistant Nurse Conversion).
All of the Diploma programmes offered are recognized by the Higher Education Ministry. Its courses are certified ISO 9001:2008 and are accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency.
There are three intakes in a year, in April, July and October. Registration is currently open for the October intake. The college is open from Monday to Friday, 9.00am – 5.00pm. Students can walk in to find out more about the courses at the campus.
