A total of 11 local universities managed to snag a spot atop the highly coveted Times Higher Education (THE) 2019 World University Rankings – up by two universities from 2018.
As expected, Universiti Malaya (UM) ranked the best, globally ranking from 301-350 compared` to 351-400 last year. Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) was next best, extending their run of stellar performances on the Times Higher Education rankings with a rank of 501-600. Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) all ranked 801-100. New additions to the THE Rankings were Universiti Teknologi MARA and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), both rankings 1001+.
One of the biggest stories to come out of the Times Higher Education 2019 World University Rankings was Tsinghua University displacing the National University of Singapore (NUS) as the best ranking university in Asia. Globally the top 3 spots saw no change, as the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge retained their no.1 and no.2 rankings respectively followed by Stanford University in third spot. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (4th), California Institute of Technology (5th), Harvard University (6th), Princeton University (7th), Yale University (8th), Imperia College London (9th) and the University of Chicago (10th) rounded up the top 10.
