Two of the nation’s perennial education frontrunners, University of Malaya (UM) and Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP), have shot up the latest iteration of Times Higher Education Emerging Economies University Rankings, placing 27th and 77th respectively in the 2018 edition.
Employing the same 13 parameters used in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, the Emerging Economies University Rankings is differentiated by the fact that it only includes institutions in countries that are classified by the Financial Times and Stock Exchange (FTSE) as “advanced emerging”, “secondary emerging” or “frontier”.The top half of the list was predictably dominated by China, with a 63-strong contingent led by the famed Peking University, which sits in the No.1 position with a final score of 80.5, pipping fellow Chinese representative Tsinghua University by a score of 0.1. Lomonosov Moscow State University from Russia completed the podium, albeit much farther behind with a final score of 58.9.
Locally, UM and UTP were followed by seven other public and private institutions – Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (101st), Universiti Putra Malaysia (108th), Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (114th), Universiti Sains Malaysia (135th), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (151st), Universiti Tenaga Nasional (159th) and Universiti Utara Malaysia (251st-300th).
