Exploring uncharted territories is one of the ways TAR UMT students learn beyond education. Such is the case for four Sabah Branch students who emerged as recipients of the Gold Award (Best Team) and Best Project title at the Science Innovation Showcase organised by Universiti Malaysia Sabah.
Lai Jia Jun and Chin Chui Yi who are pursuing the Bachelor of Business Administration (Hons) and Chan Heng Jia and Rex Lim Sheng Yi, pursuing the Bachelor of Business (Hons) Accounting and Finance, participated in the competition held from 8 – 9 July 2023. Going by the name Waste Transformers, the group of TARCians emerged top for showcasing the potential of garbage enzymes as a sustainable and eco-friendly solution.
“It is very easy to prepare this enzyme using simple ingredients like pineapple, lemon peels, brown sugar, and water which are combined in specific proportions and left to ferment over time. We presented our project through posters and PowerPoint presentations to the judges. On top of this, we also created a prototype of the garbage enzyme as a multipurpose cleaner. During the competition, we demonstrated how the garbage enzyme effectively cleaned various surfaces and showcased its eco-friendly attributes compared to conventional chemical cleaning products,” Jia Jun explained.

The key takeaway benefits the students have gained from this competition are valuable skills and experiences. “Engaging in a competition involves identifying and addressing complex problems. Through the process of developing innovative projects and prototypes, we are able to develop strong problem-solving skills and learn to approach challenges with analytical thinking. Competitions also have strict deadlines, and this helped us enhance our time management skills. In addition, working in a team for this competition strengthened our interpersonal and collaborative skills. We learnt to communicate effectively, delegate tasks, and leverage each other's strengths to give our best for the competition. Apart from that, this competition also gave us the opportunity to explore new ideas and conduct in-depth research. Engaging in innovative projects fosters a spirit of curiosity and the pursuit of knowledge beyond the traditional classroom setting,” he further expressed.
