The latest QS World University Rankings 2016/17 is out and 5 Malaysian universities continue to climb up the ranks. This time, 3 universities are in the top 300.
While institutions like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Stanford University, Harvard University, University of Cambridge, Caltech and the University of Oxford continue to dominate the top places in the world ranking, Malaysian universities are moving up the ranks and continue to improve as they become among the big players around the world.
Universiti Malaya (UM) ranking went up from 146 to 133, moving 13 places, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) ranking has gone up from 331 to 270, moving 61 places, while Universiti Teknologi Malaysia moved up 15 places from 303 to 288.
On the other hand, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) climbed the ranks 10 points, but Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) went down from 289 to 330.
Even though UM has achieved a higher ranking than last year, the university's authorities are worried about the future of the ranking. UM vice-chancellor Tan Sri Prof Dr Mohd Amin Jalaludin said in a statement that the university has lost some momentum in its internationalisation and recruitment efforts due to less funding and general economic downturn. As a result, the university lost significant points in the ranking indicators which could impact next year’s results.
The QS ranking is based on 6 indicators, each carrying a different weightage. Academic reputation takes the largest weightage at (40%) of the total score followed by student-to-faculty ratio and citations per faculty, each at (20%). Employer reputation comes at 10% followed by International faculty ratio and international student ratio at 5% each.
Within the region, National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU) continued to rank in the top 20. Meanwhile, Universitas Indonesia ranked at 325. Two universities from Thailand, Chulalongkorn University and Mahidol University, came at 252 and 283, respectively.
The government of Malaysia and the Ministry of Higher Education hope to have 2 universities in the top 100 by the year 2020.
