Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and other Malaysian universities are ranked at the lower half of the list of world's top 800 universities across 70 countries based on the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2015-2016 revealed today.
Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) made it into the top university list this year compared to last year. It is ahead in the list while four other public Malaysian universities are at the last 601-800. The universities are Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM). The University of Malaya (UM) however did not make it into the list.
Meanwhile, Singapore universities once again lead among Asian universities with the National University of Singapore (NUS) being the only Asian university in the global top 30. At rank number 26, it broke its own record in 12 years, while Nanyang Technological University (NTU) ranked 55th.
The rankings are based on core missions of the institutions on five areas: teaching, research, citations, industry income and international outlook. It draws on data from 1,100 institutions, 11 million academic papers and more than 11,000 academic surveys.
Last month, the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) released its world university rankings for 2015-2016, listing Malaysian universities at 150.
