As the cost of education continues to rise and the job market lackluster, students are becoming ever more cautious in choosing the right education for their future.
There are many industries for students to prepare for, and most of these greatly contribute to the country’s national income. However there are a few industries that also look into the professional development of their talents.
The banking and finance sector is among those industries that continue to identify and develop young talents even when they are still in training.
Take for instance, Lee Quan Xin, managed to secure an internship placement at one of the Big 4 accounting firms (Big Four Professional Services Firm), EY, during her CFAB programme that includes work experience. Currently in her Professional Stage of ICAEW, Quan Xin is determined and focused to achieve qualified chartered accountant status.
“The work-based learning module, as part of the ICAEW CFAB course, has helped me improve my communication skills as I interact with professionals from leading auditing firms. In particular, the grooming classes conducted by Sunway TES were a great chance to learn from the experts themselves on their views on hiring students, and how to make the first impression the best impression,” explains Quan Xin.
According to her, choosing a career path was not easy at first. Fortunately, her father who is also a professional accountant helped her make a decision. “After a considerable amount of research on the different routes into accountancy, I decided on ICAEW which was offered by Sunway TES. Since then I have never looked back,” says Quan Xin.
“I think the most important thing I have learnt from ICAEW CFAB, and now the ACA qualification, is time management. Balancing studies, extra-curricular activities as well as social and family time had been a major challenge to for me.”
“Training in accounting is the bedrock of further studies and qualifications,” says Andrew Lim, Senior Manager for Business Development (recruitment) at ICAEW. “It is through this experience that students can put theory into practise.”
According to Andrew, students will be evaluated for their potential to be granted an ICAEW training contract with an ICAEW Authorised Training Employers (ATE). The training contract is between 3 to 5 years. Students who secure the training contract will be given allowance during the work-based learning.
This work-based learning programme is a requirement by training partners of Sunway-TES, which are also ICAEW authorised training employers (ATEs).
“ICAEW ATEs is one of the key features of ACA training. Our ATEs include BDO, Ernst & Young, KPMG, Deloitte, PETRONAS, PricewaterhouseCoopers, and Folks DFK.”
The ICAEW programme enables a school leaver to qualify as an ACA within 5.5 years (provided that all exams are passed in the first attempt) as compared to students who take the academic route which spans from 7 to 8 years.
Due to this, more than 70 per cent of over 1,000 ICAEW students at Sunway TES are SPM leavers.
“This is a good option for SPM leavers who wish to immediately pursue their choice of career. SPM leavers can take up ICAEW’s ACA to quickly join the workforce as qualified chartered accountants,” concludes Andrew.
