Roughly four months with Kolej Yayasan UEM (KYUEM), a premier Malaysian residential college, new headmaster Dr Paul B. Rogers is making changes to continue excellence and produce high performing all-round students.
"I'm a firm believer in the adage, 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it', I have spent a couple of months listening and assessing what needs to be done. The changes are relatively minor and are being made," says Dr Rogers.
Since Rogers became headmaster, he has doubled the number of house parents from four to eight and tweaked the tutorial system. Starting January next year, tutors will meet individually with their students every two weeks.
Moreover, they are considering introducing Geography as an A level subject. Presently, they offer Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) A Levels in three streams - Arts, Mathematics and Science. They also provide classes in Malaysian Studies, Islamic Studies, Moral Studies and courses in key skills such as ICT and English Language.
In terms of continual facilities improvements, KYUEM has added new apartments for their senior students. Meanwhile, fresh students will be accomodated in refurbished single storey chalets.
"We're expecting to be at full capacity by July 2014, " says Dr Rogers. KYUEM has a maximum student capacity of 520 and the teacher-pupil ratio is 1:15. Scholars usually comprise 50 per cent of the total student population.
"Our success rate last year was 77 per cent and we have successfully placed students in fields such as medicine, engineering, law and science."
Some KYUEM graduates have successfully entered Oxford and Cambridge, while many others have entered other top universities around the world such as Imperial College, The London School of Economics and University College London as well as top class universities in the United States and Australia.
"The world of education never stays still," says Dr Rogers who spent 25 years specialising in teacher development and education. His works has brought him from Europe to the Middle East and he has given papers and workshops at conferences within companies and for major educational institutions.
"We take great pride in our excellent success rate of student placement in top universities. To be on top of things, our staff will have opportunities for continuous professional development (CPD) that will develop new skills and knowledge to do their job even more effectively."
