Demand for more apps that run on iOS, Android and whatever operating system will power future smart devices, is continuously growing. Companies are facing a dearth of mobile development talent. For students planning to take up IT with programming skills, that gap represents a fresh opportunity to embark on an exciting career.
Job listings on websites indicate a healthy demand for mobile app developers, however most of these jobs are not full-time and are not from corporate IT teams but are mostly coming from outsourcing companies or consulting firms. This coincides with Developer Economics findings that outsourced app development is by far the most profitable route
Fast Fact: Female developers are very rare in the mobile application development.
With IT budgets getting leaner, most tech, product and service companies are outsourcing mobile app projects to these consulting firms and boutique development shops such as Alphapod, Terato Tech, Convep Mobilogy, Agmo Studio, Just Mobile, Soulbiz Entertainment, Ebizu, and so forth.
Realising the shortage of skilled development talent, Alphapod trained its interns to learn new skills in mobile app development. The company has worked with household brands such as KFC, Ford, iProperty and Tourism Malaysia, to name a few.
You may have what it takes to become a mobile app developer. Graduates of computer (games & interactive media) and other IT-related courses (software engineers, UI designers) with fluency in multiple programming languages such as Xcode, JAVA, CSS, and HTML technical skills are a must.
Because of the newness of this job, not all computer and IT graduates can make that transition so short, certificate courses are made available to help graduates get equipped. Institutions of higher learning such as UCSI, INTI, UniMy andIUKL, to name a few, have mobile computing programmes that address demand for professionals in the field of mobile software applications and development.
For those who don't have any computer or IT background, entering in this segment is still possible. This industry needs content creators.
Graphic designers who have strong visual designs skills, good typography, composition and use of colour as well as writers who can create compelling content and research are more than welcome to apply.
