Studying abroad opens door to take in the allure and culture of new land. You will experience a brand-new outlook which is fascinating however, it is not always all sunshine and rainbows. Entering a whole new country comes with a variance of beliefs, customs, and languages. It is due to the differences in behaviour and personality such as body language, manners, communication which may lead to miscommunication.
The term “language barrier” includes the differences in proficiency barrier such as when a student struggles to understand another, technical barrier as when the use of professional jargon by experienced lecturers is misunderstood by students, cultural barrier such as the different views which could be normal or bizarre for two different people and physical barrier which includes physical impediments affecting both the ability to convey a message and understand the message.
However, the bridge communication gap depends on you! Here are some of the ways to overcome the language barrier.
1. Improve Proficiency
Your mother tongue may differ from the native language of the country. Especially if you are furthering your study in a non-native English-speaking country such as Germany, Korea, and Japan. Therefore, it is best for you to practice the country’s language! You may enrol in the target language lesson, or you may kill two birds with one stone by enrolling in an educational programme that includes the language as one of its’ subjects. 2. Introduce Cultural Context
You must not solely focus on vocabulary and grammar. In order to achieve native-like proficiency, you may learn the cultural differences between your mother tongue and the target language by deeply understand the lifestyles, norms, and common practices. By watching movies, reading books, or listening to the music of the target language, you can achieve a more excellent understanding of the culture!
3. Use Various Methods of Communication
You may combine verbal and non-verbal communication for a more effective conversation! Utilise your body parts such as hands, facial expressions, or any visual aid to increase understanding. However, ensure to familiarise with any possible cultural faux pas to avoid discomfort or misunderstanding. Furthermore, there is no wrong in benefiting from today’s modern communication technologies such as translation applications and many more.
