In light of the upcoming 57th Independence Day of Malaysia, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin expressed his sentiments on students' lack of Malaysian history knowledge.
He suggested that universities should have programmes that enable students to better understand and appreciate the nation's history. This could be done by enhancing social sciences and liberal arts programmes or introducing new subjects such as philosophy.
Furthermore, he called for more research, and the application of history in other fields such as education, architecture, arts, sports, and engineering.
Last year, historian Prof. Emeritus Tan Sri Dr Khoo Kay Kim remarked that Malaysian students are less proficient in their country’s history.
Khoo said that students nowadays could easily score high marks in history because they could spot topics that will come out in the examinations. The end result is that many students fail to appreciate the country’s fascinating history.
In response to this, government has decided that history be made a compulsory subject for Standard 4 studentswith an emphasis on the socio-cultural aspects of the nation’s history.
