This year’s graduation ceremony of Methodist College Kuala Lumpur (MCKL) was graced by YB Datuk Mary Yap Kain Ching, Deputy Minister of Education 1 in the morning session and Rev. Dr. Ong Hwai Teik, Bishop of The Methodist Church in Malaysia in the afternoon. The presence of the two distinguished guests of honour underscores the importance of having quality holistic education in the development of the individual and the nation.
Indeed, there was a lot to celebrate on graduation day. Many students from the A-level, Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) and Diploma in Early Childhood Education (ECE) programmes had performed admirably.
They had maintained the MCKL tradition of scoring well in Mathematics and Accounting, with 66% and 51% of students scoring As in those subjects respectively. Students who took science subjects had commendable performances, with as many as one in three students scoring a distinction in Chemistry, Biology and Physics. Seven students were presented with special awards by Edexcel, UK for achieving perfect scores in Accounting.
Many graduands had already secured scholarships and enrolment in prestigious universities around the world. How Han Ming’s achievement is outstanding as he is the only Malaysian to be awarded both the prestigious Wesleyan Freeman-Asian Scholarship and AMCHAM-MACEE Scholarship this year to enrol in Wesleyan University, US for Film Studies and Economics. He followed the footsteps of his senior Tong Kin Seng, who was the only Malaysian to be admitted
into the University of Oxford to read Medicine in 2012.
Graduation day is also about celebrating the time and experiences that students and staff had in College. As Nurul Rafhana Binti Mohamed, who made history as the youngest STAR Scholarship recipient to study for her A-Level and is one of the top students with straight A’s in the programme puts it, “MCKL has a great environment and community. The lecturers are helpful and encouraging, and my course mates are all very friendly.”
At the age of 15, she is one of the youngest to study in MCKL, but she claims to have had no trouble fitting in and adjusting to college life. Zara Kim Khoo Chen Xi, another outstanding student in the ECE programme who has been admitted into the final year of the Early Childhood Studies degree course in the University of Gloucestershire, UK with a MCKL Teaching Scholarship, considers the College as a place where students can “mature intellectually, emotionally and spiritually, and to become individuals who will go on to make the world a better place.”
Many of the students have plans to continue serving in the country or to return once they complete their overseas studies to serve in their respective professions or disciplines. This resonates with MCKL’s mission to nurture a community where excellence in all its forms is celebrated, and where individuals come alive to their God-given ability to make a unique difference in the world, wherever they are called to serve. At the end of the ceremony the closing prayer of Mr Khor Hong Yin, Executive Director of the Methodist Council of Education echoed this sentiment; when he prayed that MCKL students would “continue to contribute to the world outside with godly, authentic character on the inside… and add value to the wellbeing and prosperity of the nation, and more importantly, add value to the soul of the nation.”
MCKL provides pre-university studies through its Cambridge A-level and Australian Matriculation (WACE) programmes. It also conducts the Diploma in Early Childhood Education and the Certified Accounting Technician, UK (CAT) programmes.
