Think back for a second, and try to remember what you were doing at the age of 14. Do you vividly remember attempting to add flair to your Friendster account in the form of a cool wallpaper, or embedding some cringe worthy music into the background? Maybe the memory is rather hazy instead, something you don’t remember at all. Either way, it’s safe to assume that you didn’t build your own single-engine airplane, and then proceed to fly the very same aircraft, by yourself, across Lake Michigan, becoming the youngest person ever to fly their own plane in the process. Then again, not everyone is Sabrina Gonzalez Pasterski, a 24-year old proud first-generation Cuban-American & Chicago Public Schools alumna, currently pursuing her PhD at Harvard.

Not content merely building and flying her own plane, Gonzalez Pasterski went on to gain early admission into the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), graduating with a staggering CGPA of 5.00, a grade few know to even be possible. Her love for aviation gradually evolved as she did, her interest in physics delving deeper and growing wider, landing her on the subject matter of quantum physics and black holes, culminating in Pasterski opting to pursue high energy physics as her PhD course at Harvard.

At this point, one would be forgiven for assuming that Sabrina Gonzalez Pasterski could not possibly outdo herself any more than she already has. And yet, somehow, she managed to do just that, being given academic freedom by her supervisor in 2015, and going on to complete the Pasterski-Strominger-Zhiboedov Triangle for EM in a solo paper, one that was cited by none other than Stephen Hawking in 2016.

Pasterski then has clearly distanced herself from your average millennial by some distance, but there is another facet to her intriguing complexion that well and truly cements her reputation as a brilliant anomaly: She does not partake in any form of social media. While the rest of us squander hours capturing a perfect Instagram photo or fidgeting with with new filters, Pasterski does not have Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or even LinkedIn for that matter. The only aberration to her abstinence is a website she runs, aptly entitled PhysicsGirl.com. Furthermore, Pasterski told Yahoo that she has never had a boyfriend, smoked a cigarette nor has she ever tried an alcoholic drink.

While Pasterski may still be in the midst of completing her PhD, she’s already received job offers from Blue Origin, an aerospace company founded by Amazon.com’s Jeff Bezos, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). With her uncompromising dedication to the field supplemented by her oozing brilliance, it’s no wonder that Sabrina Gonzalez Pasterski has been dubbed the next Einstein, a moniker her humble nature has apologised for, going on to say on her website, “Sorry for the title, my mentors appear to have astronomically high hopes for me”.
