After graduating from Chong Hwa Independent High School in 2018, Er Xin Ni decided to further her studies by studying architecture in Suzhou, China. However, the Covid-19 pandemic hit, and Xin Ni, who was in Malaysia then, was unable to return to China to continue her studies.
Due to the circumstances, Xin Ni reluctantly dropped out to seek other tertiary education opportunities. At this moment, her two elder sisters recommended she enrol with their alma mater, TAR UMT.
This changed Xin Ni's life.
Xin Yi's switch from architecture to commerce resulted in her becoming TAR UMT's latest top achiever in the ACCA examinations.
Although she had some background in architecture, Xin Ni decided to pursue the Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) programme at TAR UMT, at the advice of her sisters who are both Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) graduates.
"I did not know much about accounting or taxation at that time, but my sisters’ convinced me of the reputable status of an ACCA professional qualification. The opportunity to graduate with both a Bachelor's Degree and a globally recognised professional qualification was too good an opportunity to be missed, so I grabbed it," said Xin Ni.
TAR UMT is the only institution in the world approved by ACCA to conduct the Internally Assessed ACCA Fundamentals programme, which allows Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) students to apply for nine exemptions from ACCA Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills level papers.
The decision worked out exceptionally well for Xin Ni, who not only adapted to the shift in academic path, she even emerged as one of the best students after attaining not one, but two accomplishments in the ACCA June 2024 examinations.
On top of obtaining the highest mark in Malaysia for the ACCA Advanced Financial Management (AFM) paper, the Kuala Lumpur lass also achieved the highest combined mark in Malaysia for the June 2024 examinations after ACCA announced the results.
"It was truly an unexpected result and I still could not believe my eyes when I saw the announcement! When I first applied for the programme, I had doubts if I will be able to grasp the important fundamentals of accounting and taxation. Turns out, there was nothing to be worried about as in addition to just teaching, my lecturers took the extra step to ensure all of us understood the concepts. Not only they are willing to make extra effort to explain even the most difficult concepts easily, but sometimes they use creative methods such as simple metaphors to help me comprehend the topics easier,” she explained.
With a team of dedicated lecturers, Xin Ni could focus on what she needed to do at her end. However, it was no easy task for her as she had to practice strict discipline in following her schedule to achieve a study-life balance.
"I will always draw up a planner every semester, and ensure that all my assignments and projects are completed as early as possible. Most importantly I have to trust the process and be confident that the results will show as long as I stick to my plan. Whenever I feel overwhelmed, I turn to my hobbies like drawing, reading or cooking my favourite Korean dishes to relieve my stress and give my mind some rest," said Xin Ni.
Now that she has graduated, what will Xin Ni set her eyes on next?
"My immediate goal is to secure a job as an auditor. Eventually, I am looking to become a full-fledged ACCA member after obtaining enough working experience," she added with a beaming smile.
