The actuarial career is great for anyone that enjoys analytical problem solving and developing creative business solutions. It is consistently rated as a top profession, and it provides a variety of interesting work, great job security and competitive compensation.
These days, actuaries work in many diverse areas. They can work in life and non-life insurance, advising pension funds, savings, capital projects, investments, healthcare and risk management. Such work offers management opportunities, with actuaries having a commercial as well as a technical role.
There are about 109 qualified actuaries registered as fellow of the Actuarial Society of Malaysia, the only representative body for the actuarial profession in Malaysia. The numbers have been growing, and for the past 3 to 4 years, about 10 actuaries become fellows each year. However, only about 60 to 70 per cent of these qualified actuaries are practising in Malaysia.
In Malaysia, most graduates of actuarial science find work in traditional areas such as life insurance, general insurance, health insurance, investment and pensions.
Actuaries tend to be mobile, not only within Malaysia but also other countries in the region. According to a report, demand for actuaries is strong in Australia, Singapore and Hong Kong, and with local talent pools easily depleted, actuaries are moving between these markets and relocating from outside the region.
If you are interested in becoming an actuary, you are required to earn an undergraduate degree in actuarial science (or other related courses such as mathematics, finance, statistics, etc.). There are many universities and colleges, here and abroad, that offer programs in actuarial science.
