Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) is synonymous to making graduates industry-relevant. One of the most challenging yet exciting parts of TVET is bringing the industry relevance on campus. German-Malaysian Institute, or fondly known as GMI, has so far been successful in doing this. And this happened again with the launching of the GMI-DMG Mori Technology Centre at Kompleks Teknologi 3, Production Technology Department.
The GMI-DMG Mori Technology Centre was officially launched by H.E. Mr Holger Michael, German Ambassador to Malaysia with the signing of the plaque at the entrance of the technology centre. Also present at the ceremony were Mr Ralf Ernest, Head of National & International Sales for Educational Projects for DMG Mori Akademie; Dr Frank Beerman, DMG Mori Chief Operating Officer; GMI Board Members; Mr Yusoff Md Sahir, GMI Managing Director; and GMI Management team.
The centre was initiated with the MoU signing ceremony on May 7th in the year 2007 between DMG Training Akademie GmbH and German-Malaysian Institute. While GMI provides the equipped training ground, DMG Mori Training – Akademie provides the certification on the competency training conducted at this technology centre. This collaboration covers expert input on training facilities, exchange of technical know-how and setting up of a training hub. The main intention of the collaboration was to create and establish a first-class modern, future-oriented education system for the Malaysian Precision Engineering Industry. And with the GMI-DMG Mori Technology Centre here at GMI, digital fabrication, a component of Industrie 4.0, comes to life. This centre proves that GMI is a strategic ground for an alliance between Industrie 4.0 and education.
The event not only officially opened the GMI-DMG Mori Technology Centre, but also gave due recognition to 11 personnel of the Production Technology Department who successfully completed the competency trainings under DMG-Mori. These 11 gentlemen – nine Technical Training Officers and two technicians in CNC Precision Technology, were awarded the competence certification automatically making them DMG-Mori Certified Trainers in CNC Milling Programming, CNC Turning Programming, Didactic Training and CNC Turning Programming (Advanced).
The DMG-Mori Certified Trainers are Ahmad Hazlan bin Hasmi, Mazlan bin Jaafar, Muhammad Hafiz bin Adnan, Noor Azam bin Salim, Rashdin bin Ramli, Saiful Azril bin Abdul Rahim, Sharani bin Yusof, Sohaimi bin Pawachi, Tahrin bin Othman, Zairul Nazim bin Mohd Shah, and Zuliskandar bin Ahmad.The event ended with a showcase of the DMG machinery at work by the eleven DMG-Mori Certified Trainers. With this technology centre, GMI and DMG hope to train and deliver exceptionally competent machinists to the CNC industry

GMI offers diploma programmes in Industrial Electronics and Production Technology fields as well as Pre-University Program (German A-Level Preparatory Program or GAPP) for students who are keen to pursue their Bachelor of Engineering in University of Applied Science in Germany.
